How it works

Most VPN protocols announce themselves. Deep packet inspection reads the shape of the traffic, recognizes the protocol on sight, and a network that wants to block VPNs simply drops it. Cloak Mode wraps the tunnel so it looks like ordinary encrypted web traffic, leaving nothing familiar for a filter to match against.

When to turn it on

Turn it on when a network is actively fighting VPNs: a school or office firewall, hotel and airport Wi-Fi that blocks tunnels, or a national filter. On a home connection that is not blocking anything, you do not need it.

What it costs you

Cloaked traffic carries more overhead than a direct tunnel, so it can be a little slower and use slightly more battery. That is the trade: raw speed when nothing is in your way, a connection that still works when something is.
