How it works
Most VPN protocols announce themselves. Deep packet inspection reads the shape of the traffic, recognizes the protocol on sight, and a network that wants to block VPNs simply drops it. Cloak Mode wraps the tunnel so it looks like ordinary encrypted web traffic, leaving nothing familiar for a filter to match against. It hides what the traffic is, not where it goes, so a server can still be blocked by its IP address. If you run your own, see how to keep its IP from being blocked.
When to turn it on
Turn it on when a network is actively fighting VPNs: a school or office firewall, hotel and airport Wi-Fi that blocks tunnels, or a national filter. On a home connection that is not blocking anything, you do not need it.
What it costs you
Cloaked traffic carries more overhead than a direct tunnel, so it can be a little slower and use slightly more battery. That is the trade: raw speed when nothing is in your way, a connection that still works when something is.
