A location is a group of servers

Picking a country does not tie you to one machine. Every location here runs several servers, and the app chooses between them for you, going for the fastest one it can reach. You decide where to appear; it works out which server gets you there.

The free plan is funded by ads, so it is not available in China or in other countries where ads are not served. That is about where you are, not where the server is. Premium has no such limit.

Which one should you pick?

It depends on what you came for, and the two answers point in different directions.

  • For speed: the nearest one

Every request travels to the server and back, so distance costs time on all of them. Pick the country closest to you, then test it properly instead of guessing.

  • For reach: the one where the content lives

If a service only works from one country, that is the country to connect from. Split tunneling by country sends just that traffic through it and leaves the rest alone.

Global coverage

Servers sit close to every region and culture we serve, from the Americas to Oceania, so there is usually a country near you for speed and the right one for reach. If yours is missing, tell us which country you need, and whether it is for speed or for reaching something specific, because that changes where the server should be.

Frequently Asked Questions

Let's find the answers to your questions.

Yes. Locations are added where demand shows up, and requests are how we see it. Use the contact page, name the country, and say whether you need it for speed or to reach something specific, because that changes where the server should be.

Every VPN costs some speed: your data is encrypted and travels through one more machine before it reaches the site you asked for. Distance is usually the bigger factor, so a nearer server helps most. Cloak Mode and Smart Proxies each add overhead and can be turned off when nothing is blocking you. See the speed testing guide for how to measure it properly.

Yes. The free plan has no time limit and no forced upgrade, and there is no account to create. It is funded by ads, so it is not available in China or in other countries where ads are not served. Premium is there when you want more locations, faster servers, an ad-free app and 24/7 support, and it has no such limit.

No. The VpnHood! server can cap speed per user, and on the free servers it does not. What differs between the plans is capacity: free servers carry many more people, so your share of a server changes with how busy it is, while Premium servers are more powerful and shared only among premium users, which is why they are consistently faster.
